ERGO - WE NEED CONTROL OF THE COMMONS
I am by nature pro-business as I have for the last 30 plus year owned and operated a water and wastewater service and installation contracting company in Arizona specializing in residential and small flow commercial facilities. I make mention of this not to feather my own nest but rather to set the stage for my comments to follow. I champion anyone who desires to invest his/her own time, effort, funds to build any legitimate business and I salute the tenacity required to be successful in any endeavor.
I do, however, find my internal “whisper voice” activated whenever I read about the privatization of the “commons” – i.e. those universal resources associated with our air and water.
I do not know anything about Global Water Resources, save what is currently published in this article. I did go “on-line” attempting to find additional information about this company, which I learned is incorporated in the State of Delaware. Moreover I went to the company’s website and signed up for the newsletter along with completing their comment section requesting information about whether or not they are owned by any of the multinational for profit water purveyors such as Suez…? I additionally requested to know who the major stockholders are as this information I could not ascertain from the Az Corp Commission website, which left me a bit uncomfortable. I trust my concern about Global Water Resources is unfounded, however, until I receive additional information I will continue to defer to the “little voice” resonating within.
I do not blame Global Water Resources or any for profit water purveyor for taking advantage of the opportunities “we” – that’s you and me – as a result of our collective choice to abdicate any accountability or responsibility over those “we” elect … to serve and to protect … our interests. I don’t know about you, but the current members of Az Corp Commission have not demonstrated they are passionate about looking out for our interest as the decisions they have rendered have been almost always in favor of the corporation. Until “we” choose to elect individuals to any and every office who honestly champion our interests we can not and should not expect different results.
Looking for a solution…? It is a mistake individually and collectively to give up care, custody and control to for profit corporate interests unless “we” – that’s you and me – have a most prominent seat at the table providing oversight.
To paint Global Water Resources as bad would be grossly unfair. To paint Global Water Resources as primarily concerned about achieving an ever increasing bottom line even at your expense is 100% true and valid, as it is for all for-profit corporations. You are NOT Global Water Resources principal concern accumulating as many of Uncle Sam’s dollars is.
Ergo … “we” need to exercise ultimate control over the commons…!
