Hypocritical Oath: Psychologists and Torture
By Amy Goodman, King Features Syndicate. Posted June 6, 2007. … EXERPTED
First, do no harm. This tenet of medicine applies equally to psychologists, yet they are increasingly implicated in abusive interrogations, dare we say torture, at U.S. military detention facilities like Guantanamo. While the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association both have passed resolutions prohibiting members from participating in interrogations, the American Psychological Association refuses to, despite the outrage of many of its members.
Have all Oaths’ become hypocritical . . . ?
It seems to me when taking any oath one of its implied moral principal tenet’s is to do no harm. Whether the Oath is providing testimony before one’s peers, or in a court of law, or accepting the office of President of the United States of America, or becoming an active member of the medical profession.
Morality is one of those topics which seek its justification on purely personal basis. Therefore “we” – that’s you and me – should not expect everyone to adhere to a standard of conduct (morality) personal to us. On the contrary, “we” should expect and anticipate everyone else will lie, cheat, steal, manipulate, conjure and distort any fact to present themselves in the best (morality) light.
It should come as no surprise the “Hypotactic Oath” administered by the medical profession has been bastardized as “we” – that’s you and me – have chosen to direct our attention to achieving “goodie$” at the expense of conviction, beliefs, standards or morality.
“We” collectively chose to allow our President to be covertly “selected” and then “we” permitted him to engage in an unauthorized preemptive unilateral war against a sovereign nation – Iraq – whose only fault was to have a leader despised by George W. Bush. The Oath taken by George W. Bush to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States was as equally hypocritical as that alleged of members of the American Medical Association and American Psychiatric Association.
