greywater and you
Inherent and implicit in this article is Arizona actually encourages the use of “greywater”- surprise- ain’t true…?
As one who has been a “stakeholder” in a number of recent ADEQ ventures into promulgating and revising its rules, currently the hurtles one is required to overcome to “lawfully” use greywater has been designed to negate the public’s use of greywater. To suggest otherwise without performing your own evaluation of the process in Arizona is totally disingenuous.
Why, might you inquire would ADEQ deliberately impose barriers permitting the public to utilize this most valuable of water resources. Well for one our government contracted long ago with Arizona Public Service, (APS) the principal electric power supplier for metro Phoenix, a specified quantity of effluent water from the publicly owned wastewater treatment plant as cooling water for the massive nuclear power generating facility – Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Facility, about 40 miles from Phoenix. A substantial portion of the remaining effluent is contracted to an irrigation district for use as water on reputedly non-edible crops, like alfalfa, with dairies close by…???? ….yea right. Moreover, recently a portion is being diverted to a long term reclamation project wherein this “poop” water is being pumping into the ground to be retained and then to be withdrawn later as “safe” potable (drinking) water.
So, honestly our rules, regulations are NOT user friendly, though to look at the elusive brochures published by ADEQ one would easily be lead to conclude differently. Government and industry need all the sewage they can get, therefore, there is absolutely no incentive to honestly promote the public’s private use of its own greywater.
Check it out for yourself….?
