CLIMATE CHANGE HITS THE WEST … DENVER POST …5/28/08
Some of the most dramatic — and negative — effects from climate change will take place in the American West, according to a new federal study. While the East will become wetter and Midwest grain crops may benefit from longer growing seasons, the West will be drier and rangeland livestock production could decline because of stress from hotter summers.
The study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — a survey and synthesis of existing research — paints a picture of sweeping changes in the next 30 to 50 years. The analysis is based on an assumed rise in the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide — the main greenhouse gas — from the current 380 parts per million to 440 ppm and a 2.16 degree Fahrenheit increase in average temperature.
According to the report, Western states will face substantial challenges because of growing demand for water and big projected drops in supplies. From 2040 to 2060, anticipated water flows from rainfall in much of the West are likely to approach a 20 percent decrease in the average from 1901 to 1970, and are likely to be much lower in places like the fast-growing Southwest. In contrast, runoff in much of the Midwest and East is expected to increase that much or more
Many years ago in my youth I trusted both “science” and to a far greater degree the “media” – especially newspapers.
Today 2008, I find I can trust neither and that saddens me. What is the truth about climate change…? Where can one go to determine what the truth may be…? Seemingly every source I seek has a position it is trying to sell or stipulate. Where are the essential pros and cons clearly concisely laid out allowing you and me to determine for ourselves the truth surrounding climate change…?
I don’t know about you, but for me the more I read, the more I discover on the internet the more convoluted my thoughts become. My memory I trust though certainly not infallible it is. And my memory informs me that as I lived in the West most all my life the weather today is quite different from that of my youth. The summer is longer, hotter with far less of those promised “monsoons.” Our winter weather is without that much needed snow and rain. So what does that inform me about climate change…? Is this as some experts project merely a blip in the annuals of time…? Or is this as others speculate a harbinger of far more intemperate times…?
It seems to me that our “science” was initially a bit flawed and our ego today will permit us not to admit. By God, it’s our water it says so right here, it matters not, there never was that amount of water to divide – Colorado River for one.
Thorough the West the landscape is littered with what our “science” calls ruins of civilizations past. This science too most often attributes their decline to lack of water, disease or change in climate. How then can we so smugly suggest this change in climate we experience today is merely a blip…?
When any authority speaks of climate change follow the money trail see where it leads often it will cogently display the truth they seek to project. Our job yours and mine is to ask questions, ask questions, demand full disclosure accepting only honest answers. Partial truths,
Looking for a solution…? glib 30 second sound bites delivered for convenience of the talking heads on TV discard immediately as trash.
Accept the personal accountability and responsibility to seek what’s true for you or accept without question, the answers and solutions they for profit provide to you.
