though symbolic at best, it's better than nothing
NAU joins pledge to reduce global warming emissions … Sunday, June 10, 2007 6:17 AM MST… Flagstaff AzDailySun.com … EXERPTED
Northern Arizona University President John Haeger will join more than 250 other college and university presidents in formally committing to reduce and eventually eliminate NAU's global warming emissions. In January, Haeger became a charter signatory of the climate commitment, created as an avenue for university leaders to define and address the challenges of climate change. By being an early signer, Haeger has assumed a role in the group's leadership circle, which will eventually include up to 25 university and college presidents who will become the public face and lead supporters of the program."Northern Arizona University is a leader in climate change research and curriculum, and through collaborative efforts throughout campus we are assessing ways to reduce our own greenhouse emissions," Haeger said. "We are pleased to officially commit to developing the diversity of skills needed to reverse global warming."The Presidents Climate Commitment is the first effort by any major group to set climate neutrality-not just a reduction-as its target. This undertaking by America's colleges and universities is inspired by efforts like the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, the U.S. Climate Action Partnership and other collective efforts by states and businesses, according to an NAU Public Affairs press release.
Though only symbolic the choice by NAU to formally commit to reducing & eventually eliminating the global warming emission emanating from NAU is laudable..!
That the President of NAU, like his counter parts at ASU and UA, is not able to unilaterally make and act outside the will and direction of the highly political Board of Regents makes the NAU commitment highly speculative at best.
One can only hope the Board of Regent are of a like mind and persuasion respecting the global footprint “we” American impact and manifest upon Earth.
